About BMW
Founded in Germany in 1916, BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke AG) is most notably a car brand, but also manufactures engines and motorcycles. Renowned for its production of luxury and high performance vehicles, BMW is also owner and operator of two iconic English vehicle makes, in Rolls Royce and Mini.
Forced to stop aircraft engine production under the terms of the Versailles Treaty, BMW originally began producing motorcycles and cars in 1923 and 1928, respectively. Production of cars halted in WW2 when BMW again began manufacturing aircraft engines, which continued until well after the war ended. However, the company ran into financial difficulties in 1959 and returned to car production in order to recover.
The BMW New Class compact sedans and coupes were launched in 1962 and featured fully independent suspension, front disc brakes and MacPherson struts. Since that time, BMW has enjoyed continued success, producing high quality, luxury cars with first-class performance, and in the process acquiring several other American and British vehicle brands.
Current BMW models include the little Series1 and the 7 series Executive Sedan, and BMW remains true to its rear wheel drive focus, even in the small 1 series. Indeed, this feature is present in all BMW's vehicles except its SUV's. The BMW performance variant, the M Class, has won numerous awards for design and performance, and BMW remains one of the world's most popular prestige car brands.
