Sydney ‘Tyre Man’ Off The Throne

August 16, 2012 | JAX

Manly’s iconic tyre man was taken down recently as its deteriorating condition made him a potential danger for any one passing the almost 100 tyre high installation.

The dummy man on top of the tyre pile watched Sydney’s beach suburb Manly for over 80 years.

An application for a heritage grant had been lodged by residents with the local council, however the request was declined as the tyre man was not listed on the council’s heritage register.

No one knows when exactly the tyre man had been installed, but it was some time during the late 1920s when Eddie Sinden of Sinden Tyre and Rubber Company erected the installation and even after the company left the tyre man watched over Manly until recently.
