DOUG JOHNSTON, EDITOR OF 4X4GALORE.COM, RECENTLY UNDERTOOK AN EPIC TRIP TO CAPE YORK, QUEENSLAND, COVERING APPROXIMATELY 9,000KM ON JUST ABOUT EVERY CONCEIVABLE ON-ROAD AND OFF-ROAD DRIVING SURFACE. HIS CHOICE OF TYRES FOR THE ADVENTURE WAS NONE OTHER THAN THE GOODYEAR WRANGLER MTR WITH KEVLAR.
Dry highway, wet highway, tight mountainous areas, gravel and rough dirt corrugations with occasional bull dust sections thrown in for good measure were just some of the challenges that met the travelling party – and that was before reaching the Old Telegraph Track, one of Australia’s most notorious 4X4 tracks.
Doug and his team rocked and rolled over numerous wombat hole sections which really tested the tyres and suspension, including driving up and down near vertical entry and exits on the numerous creek and river crossings, some with rocky bottoms and others very sandy.
“To say we are over the moon with the MTR with Kevlar tyre is an understatement,” Doug said.
“It surpassed our expectations in every situation, especially some of those near vertical river exits. A thorough check of the tyres on our return showed absolutely no chipping as well.”
