Abarth was born in the dust and danger of up-hill climbing and racing, matching a field of power and prestige; the Porsche 904 and Ferrari Dino competed against the wily Abarth, starring in 850cc to 2000cc races. After a highly lucrative, long-term venture into high performance exhaust pipes and tuning kits, Abarth was acquired by Fiat in 1971. Satisfied with its track-side influence, Fiat diversified Abarth into producing racers, rarely breaking the domestic market. As time forgot the Abarth name and Fiat used the label as an after-thought to indicate performance, Abarth’s light had almost died out.
In 2007, Fiat re-booted the Abarth image, releasing the Grande Punto Abarth; the Punto became the first Fiat to roll out in Australia since 1989. Unfortunately, it failed due to a lacklustre public response. Despite an ambivalent reception Down Under, the Punto wowed South American critics and inspired European detractors to reserve judgement, as the Grande Punto Abarth was awarded 5 stars in the NCAP crash test. Not only did the latest Abath have guts, it was safe to boot.
Far from being discouraged, Fiat Chrysler Group Australia have announced the re-introduction of the Grande Punto Abarth into the 2013 line-up, acknowledging their mistake of over-pricing.
