JAX Tyres joins Wheels with Tyres

The JAX Tyres Tyres team has played a significant role in WHEELS' magazine's annual tyre test for 2007.

The story about the test - the fifth carried out by long-term WHEELS' writer John Cadogan - pays tribute to the crew from JAX Tyres who not only helped select the tyres to be tested but also worked full-speed at re-fitting rubber to rims to keep the test running efficiently.

The actual driving during the test was done by experienced rally and circuit drivers, Rick Bates and Ed Ordynski, both of whom are well qualified to assess tyre quality, given its importance during their careers.

They spent three days at Sydney's Eastern Creek Raceway with Cadogan, a team from WHEELS and the JQFT crew, using the skidpan and low-speed figure-of-eight skid circuit.

Two test cars were used - a six-speed manual VE Commodore SS and a two-litre turbo-diesel Volkswagen Golf DSG.

Six premium tyres in each size - 205/45R18 and 205/55R16 - were selected from ranges by Bridgestone, Dunlop, Falken, Goodyear, Hankook and Pirelli

During the test, the JQFT crew did 112 separate tyre fittings, loosened and tightened around 560 wheel nuts and raised and lowered the test cars more than 40 times.

Helping to make lighter work of the task was the mighty Eagle SMF AS 944 tyre-fitting machines which uses pneumatic arms to fit - and un-fit - tyres to rims of up to 24-inches in diameter.
