New Management Team at JAX Tyres Caloundra
Good tyres, good service and good people sounds like a good slogan - but it's also the philosophy that guides one of the newest teams in the JAX Tyres Tyre chain.
Long-time friends Rod Kirkcaldie and Bob Cooper have joined forces to take over the Caloundra store (71A Bowman Road) on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
Rod has years of experience in the tyre industry and Bob in senior management roles but both wanted to try owning their own business so, when the opportunity came up late last year, they grabbed it.
"It's a good business with a lot of potential, provided we pay the right attention to customer service," says Bob.
"We need to be pro-active with our customers and make sure they understand what we have to offer, that we can help them with mechanical service as well as great deals on tyres."
Service sells, says Rod, and that's what he, Bob and their team of three (two tyre fitters and a fully qualified mechanic) are using as their focus.
"It's great to be able to help people. We really enjoy it when our customers leave satisfied because we've looked after them."
Rod was born and bred in Nambour and finished his schooling in Brisbane. He then spent five seasons playing football (Australian Rules) professionally but worked in the tyre industry all the way through, starting as a trainee manager.
"In those days, real footballers had real jobs as well as what they did on the weekend!" he laughs.
After his playing career finished, he went 'walkabout' for several years, working his way around the Pacific Islands, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand and it was in Vanuatu that he met the man who is now his business partner.
"I owned a sports store at the time Rod arrived and was actively involved in the local cricket team," says Bob, an electrician by trade and former soccer player who was born and bred in the UK and moved to Australia in 1975.
"Once I established that he could play cricket and drink beer, he was in!"
From that day, 11 years ago, grew a great friendship that has seen the two talk often about working together and finally finding the opportunity to do so.
When they're not flat-chat with the business, both men are still involved in sport, managing and coaching local junior teams (futsal and soccer).
JAX Tyres at Caloundra is one of a chain of 71 stores along the east coast of Australia, from Queensland to Tasmania.
