John Bowe: V8 Season Preview
What an exciting V8 Supercar Championship we have in store for 2009! There has been plenty of rule changes during the off season in an effort to make the Series an even more entertaining show, and that is exactly what I think we are going to see come the first round in Adelaide with the Clipsal 500 from the 19th-22nd of March.
Traditionally the season opener is always a cracker and will now consist of two longer 250km races instead of three shorter ones to make up the 500km total. This means there will be more fuel stops for all the teams who will also be running the E85 Ethanol fuel for the first time.
Another big change is the increase in the number of real street circuits with the Series seeing five of them in this year's calendar, including the new Townsville 400 and the Homebush Grand Finale in Sydney. The Townsville 400 in particular is going to be huge for the sport and Far North Queensland as it establishes itself as one of the signature events.
It will undoubtedly be 'the' sporting event for the region and I think it will be bigger than Ben Hur with reports tickets are already selling fast!
Onto something a bit more personal now, I have recently put a set of the Goodyear Asymmetric's (234/45/17) on my Ford Mondeo Turbo Diesel and am massively impressed. With the good weather recently I've only had the chance to drive with them in dry conditions but the amazing tread design provides instant grip and response that I have never experienced on a street tyre before. I'll be sure to give you some updates on them when we get some rain and I can give you my thoughts with them in the wet and other conditions.
